Loraine Bios
You see them in the elevators, while getting your mail, while tossing your recycling. You smile and comment about the weather, the Packers, their large amount of trash. But who are they really?
Loraine Bios is a compilation of biographical information to help residents meet others in our vertical community.

Unit 606, Leanne Puglielli
Leanne moved to the Loraine in 2008. She grew up on a farm in Iowa that had been in her family for one hundred years by the time she turned twenty, and was one of five farms settled by her various great-great grandfathers. It is still in the family. She graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa and entered graduate school in Baltimore, Md. She finished her Master’s at Smith College after she married Vince Puglielli, a native of Boston, whom she met while working at Brookhaven National Lab on Eastern Long Island, New York. Their two children were born and raised in King George, Virginia where Leanne spent ten years as an Elementary School Principal and Five years as a Middle School Principal in Southern Maryland. She finished her PhD at The Ohio State University after the family moved to Worthington, Ohio. She served as the Organizational Development Director of the Ohio Department of Education before moving to Higher Ed teaching Strategy and High Performing Organizations in the MBA program at Capital University and in the John Glenn School of Public Affairs at Ohio State. She developed the curriculum for the Ohio Certified Public Manager Program and the processes for the Ohio Award of Excellence. She finished her teaching career at Edgewood College after moving to Madison, but still serves as the project advisor for the State of Nevada Certified Public Manager Program.
Leanne’s primary interest is spending time with her Grandson, Joshua, and loudly cheering through his soccer and basketball games. In addition to traveling, writing (published a memoir in 2016), substantive conversation, providing leadership for CIAO! (Cultural Italian American Organization), and organizing bimonthly Grinnell-in-Madison Pub Nights, Leanne invests most of her time working on justice issues in varying contexts and definitions. She taught a course called JustFaith for several years, wrote a resource guide for the Ministry of all Baptized persons while chairing the Commission on Ministry for the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee, and worked on collaborative processes (and strategic planning) while serving on the Standing Committee and the Trustees of Funds and Endowments. She heads a team at St. Andrew’s that writes a justice reflection on the gospel every Sunday. She is a member of the League of Women Voters, is qualified to register people to vote, and is a poll worker. She is actively engaged with racial disparities issues in Madison – speaking, facilitating conversations, working with Justified Anger and being actively engaged with the justice work of Everett Mitchell via Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church.

Unit 707, Bobbie Johnson
I grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, and went to the University of Michigan for undergrad and grad school. Then I moved to Chicago, and in 1991, to Madison, to work in educational publishing. After more than 30 years in the field, I wanted to return to the pleasures that drew me to publishing in the first place: writing and editing. Now I work 80% time at the Center for Health Enhancement Systems Studies at UW as a science writer. I like it so well I’m not tempted to retire—or not very often, anyway.
A few of my favorite things: dogs, though I don’t have my own now; music, especially live chamber music; living in the Loraine (I moved in in 2014) and downtown, right in the thick of so much I enjoy doing; cribbage; walking to work and most anywhere; travel; reading; and best of all, time with friends and family.

Unit 711, Lincoln and Nancy Berland
Lincoln and I grew up in Milwaukee, moved to Washington University in St. Louis to get Lincoln’s M.D. and my Ph.D. After returning home for seven years, we relocated the whole family to Birmingham, Alabama. Luckily, our son and daughter-in-law (Matthew and Leema) became faculty at UW and we were able to return home to our alma mater, at least part-time. Lincoln retired from the medical school but I continue to have a practice in psychology in Alabama. We bought the condo so we could have our own place when we come to see our grandchildren, Asher and Ella. We love the Loraine and hope to spend more 6-day weeks there as the weather improves. We have been spoiled by the beautiful south and our daughter, Nicole still goes to graduate school in the south, at UNC-Chapel Hill.
I am including these pictures because our children and grandchildren sometimes can be seen hanging around. They love the Loraine as well and the Capitol is their playground.

Unit 806, Norma and Elliott Sober
Norma and Elliott were among the first to move into the Loraine in 2004. They have lived in Madison since 1974. Norma grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and Elliott in Baltimore. Elliott is a professor of philosophy at the UW, specializing in philosophy of science. Norma is a retired arts administrator. She was the outreach director of the old Madison Civic Center (now Overture). Most of her career was at Madison Repertory Theatre in development and education. Their joint interests include classical music, opera, theater, dance, eating, travel, and watching the Badgers and Packers from the comfort of their own (or someone else’s) couch.
Elliott sails at Hoofers (the UW sailing club) whenever possible. Another longtime interest is both drinking and making wine and hard cider, which he ferments in their laundry room. He’s an enthusiastic cook and especially likes making paella. Norma is on the board of directors of Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society, a summer chamber music festival. She also served for seven years on the Madison Arts Commission. She spends lots of time with books. She’s completing her final year on the Loraine’s board of directors and is chair of the Hospitality Committee.

Unit 1004, Eric and Jo Eisenhart
We are both graduates of the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin with degrees in chemistry. After graduating we spent 25 years on the East Coast working for either Rohm and Haas or Pfizer as chemists before Jo moved into Human Resources. In 2011 we had the opportunity to move back to Wisconsin when Jo took a job leading Human Resources for Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee. We are planning to retire to Madison and take up full time residence in the Loraine. We enjoy keeping in shape and when time allows working with ceramics, reading, cooking/baking, traveling, gardening, and attending Badger sports.
